Why Spay or Neuter?

Spaying and neutering have been shown to significantly reduce the number of animals that enter shelters and rescues each year, as well as the number of animals that are euthanized because forever homes cannot be found.  Below we list some very good reasons to spay/neuter your pets.
  • Spaying (especially before the first heat) helps prevent uterine infections, and minimizes the risk of ovarian, uterine, and breast cancer in your female pet.
  • Neutering prevents testicular cancer in your male.
  • Your spayed female won't go into heat.
  • Your male dog may be less likely to roam away from home.
  • The cost of a spay/neuter surgery is much less than the cost of having a litter.
  • Spaying and neutering pets minimizes the tax dollars your community must spend on caring for unwanted, abandoned and neglected animals.

Debunking Myths about Spay/Neuter

The myths presented below have been paraphrased from various sources (see 'For Additional Information' below).

Myth:   My pet will gain weight.
Too much food and lack of exercise contribute to weight gain in your pet.  If you monitor food intake and provide exercise, your pets will stay trim.

Myth:   It’s better for my female to have one litter before spaying her.
There is no medical evidence to support this claim. Spaying before the first heat cycle can improve your pet's overall health and longevity.

Myth:   My pet is purebred so he can't be fixed.
Purebreds and their offspring also end up in shelters and rescues.

Myth:   I will find good homes for each member of the litter.
Giving litters away means that families who might have adopted from a shelter or rescue may not.

Myth:   I love my pet and want another pet just like her.
There is no guarantee that a puppy or kitten will have the parents' best qualities.

Myth:  Spaying/neutering costs too much.
Spay/neuter surgeries offered through low cost spay and neuter programs across the country are now more affordable and accessible.   See ASPCA's Searchable Database of Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Providers.
